Best Beauty Apps 2012

I couldn't resist posting this great article. Usually I provide a link to the post of interest but I find that a little boring and just lazy. This article is by  Melissa Milrad Goldstein and you can find it on makeup.com. I take no credit other than finding it and posting it on my blog! My favorite is the Lancome download.

Not surprisingly, the big beauty brands are leading the way with the most user-friendly makeup apps to help indulge your inner makeup artist. Tap, swipe, and type your way to a prettier you with these four favorites.

#1 Marie Claire‘s Backstage Beauty Trends

There are makeup junkies and then there are the cosmetic elitists who are only interested in this season’s looks. If you fall into the latter camp, then this app is for you. Create runway looks with a virtual supply of Chanel colors (also available for purchase). Time suck? Yes. A more productive alternative to Angry Birds? You betcha.
Free; iPad

#2 The LancĂ´me Make-up Application

Chic images, product suggestions, and tips from YouTube sensation Michelle Phan represent all the features you want in a basic beauty app. But it’s the little added things that you’ll find the most engaging. The penciled face charts that allow you to play with the season’s shades and the Diagnoscils tools that recommend the right mascara for your fringe all make this a must-have.
Free; iPad and iPhone

#3 L’Oreal True Match Beauty Matchmaker

This L’Oreal app takes the guesswork out of finding the right foundation shade. Answer nine quick questions and up pops your color recommendation. And better yet, all you need to do is head to the drugstore to get it—no salespeople or beauty counters required.
Free; iPad and iPhone

#4 MAKE UP FOR EVER Pocket Studio

What’s your style today? Trendy? Glamorous? What about your mood? Relaxed? Sultry? This app helps create the look that best exemplifies the image you’re trying to portray. But what sets it apart is its SOS Studio to help you combat makeup maladies such as hyper-pigmentation, redness, and tired eyes.

Pink Inspired Polish Duo

I was browsing the internet checking out pics of nail colours by Barielle. Greens, pinks, blues....it inspired me to paint my nails even though I should be hitting the pillow as I have so much to do tomorrow and it's late!  I fell in love with the polish I saw at the drug store last week. Since the weather has finally turned sunny and warm, I felt the urge to spirit my happy feelings into my nails! The base colour is from Revlon called 'Perfect Pink". I just picked up a new brand of pink sparkle polish from "Cosmetic Arts' there is no name on the bottle of the actual colour...weird. The specks are all colours and very small, tiny in fact. It's funny how I can spend tens of dollars on high end polishes like OPI or Christian Dior (just bought a delightful baby pink #243) but once in awhile I am drawn to a colour and I must have it. The array of colour out there is phenomenal. Just when you think you have every pink under the sun, another shade pops up.

I have come to realize that I have the ugliest fingers!!! I should really look into photoshop or piknik or something!!! That's it, I am going to use my camera from now on and not my phone. Now I have to find the battery charger and that may take awhile! I lost a cordless phone six months ago and I haven't been able to find it!!!!

Hope you like it!

The Brown's Have It & All That Glitters

Muted purple, taupe's and bland peach and pink.....I call them sad polishes like clouds of colour on rainy days. This last year has been quite a time for nail polish! I remember when hot pink and deep reds were in, now it seems the more dull, the better! Then all of the sudden, sparkle makes a come back to share a bright and flashy change....hey! why not wear a boring shade of pink but add a top coat of glitter! Even better, add the glitter to the polish! To think that was the end of that would be ludicrous! Heck, now I see blues and pinks and purples with glitter of every colour. Sparkles that reflect in silver, gold, red and blue. I just adore them. They really add a pick me up to anything. I just detest trying to take it off with polish remover....pick up the pace and create a remover that will  actually work on glitter polish. OPI should be working on that as we speak, (hurry up!!!). How else will we still desire to buy all the glitter and sparkles that has come to be the norm in nail trends this spring?

But now I am seeing a new trend and I quite like it too. It is brown...dark brown, puky brown, mud brown, caramel, clay....all nice and thankfully this shade goes with every piece of clothing I own. No worries about wearing a red dress with blue polish (yuck).

But let's go one better, let's do the ombre nail craze. Not the one where you do a gradual change on each nail from light to dark, but let's do each nail itself in a shade of brown and work your way to the pinky in five different shades. This is no problem for me, I have at least 12 shades of brown, pink, blue, purple for that matter! I love this fad. It was brought to my attention at the Summer Trends 2012 hosted by Loose Button last week. Chantal Guertin showed a pic in her fun discussion with us on Beauty Trends. So off to my favorite lunch time store, Winners. There I found two really nice shades of brown from ELF and Color Club. I have never tried an ELF polish before...I know crazy right!!  This fun style would go really well with the Hoola Lip Gloss that I also received at the event. The colour is a neutral brown and would work so well together. That is what encouraged me to try this. Tonight however I am just too lazy and tired to search out the right browns and go ombre. Instead I am going for the brown look with my all time favorite top coat, my Essie Luxeffects in 'Pure Perfection" although the gold polish called 'As Gold As It Gets' would probably work even better....But now, just looking for the silver, I came across my new sparkle pink from Christian Dior and I am very tempted to start all over and go for the pink, my usual. Pink has always been my go to colour. Decisions  decisions ....

Here are some great shots of ombre nails and some sparkles....

MEDITERRANEAN MAKE-UP TUTORIAL

Looking for a new look? Try make up Mediterranean style! Wanted to share this tutorial from my favourite make up company, Pupa. I wish I could offer you a site that you could buy some of these products on line but Pupa does not sell their products over the internet. You can find some of their make up, with more and more coming at Pharma Plus Drug Stores. Not all of them, only select stores. I will have to do a post on Pupa really soon and show you all the great products I have accumulated! They really have some wonderful eye shadows, blushes and mascara to die for!

In Loving Memory of Memories

Can you remember your first memory of finding your very own 'beauty' indentity? That moment or moments that have stayed with you since childhood? Who influenced your style? Who had that elegance or finesse that you wanted to emulate? For me, what comes to mind is gold sparkle dust nail polish from the 1940's, a fox fur shoulder wrap and rose scented face cream. These three things are so deeply instilled in my heart and brain...I must have been 5 yrs old or younger and the excitement of a new adventure awaited me every Sunday when I went to visit my Grandparents.

Looking back I realize that although we are all genetically unique, we are very much influenced by people and things around us. My Grandmother was the artistic spitfire with bold style and it is her that has guided my fashion and beauty style. It's no wonder I have 200 nail polishes, I used to run to my Grandmother's bedroom closet and vanity in search of hers. She had quite the collection herself! I keep my lipgloss and balms by my bed in a drawer, she had them on the side table with her hand and face creams in the bedroom.  I truly believe that the eloquence and fashionista style my Grandmother held is inspired through me, that this has skipped a generation and landed in me. That my daughter will more than likely be inspired by my Mother and not me.

My Grandmother passed away last week, I have been reminiscing and thinking about the long and wonderful life she led. How much we are alike and how much I miss her, wishing to go back in time to share those days we spent together. She was really something and I am very proud to share not only her genetics but the ahead of her time style, she is missed dearly.

Think about all your influences and your style, look to  family for love, support and guidance. Keep in your heart the little things that have meant so much to you and fond memories. They are such wonderful things to cherish!

Summer Trends 2012 Event by Loose Button - What a Night!

I had such an amazing time tonight at the Loose Button "Summer Trends 2012" event. I was a lucky winner in the contest hosted by Loose Button which was held at the Dermalogica Toronto Training Centre.
Upon entering, I was greeted by staff at Dermalogica, escorted upstairs to the glamorous cocktail party taking place. The food was up scale and trendy; feta and watermelon stackables, smoked turkey and avocado bites, veggies and dip, oodles of cheese and crackers, fresh fruit and gorgeous designer cupcakes. Wine was served up, red or white and the atmosphere bubbly. On hand were the sponsors of the party showing off their wares. Valentino  with their new fragrance, Valentina. The notes of bergamot and strawberry with a hint of jasmine...devine. What I haven't seen before was the scent in the form of a light oil spray. Use as a moisturiser or to layer the scent. Real Parisian flare. Dermalogica had three stations set up with educated skin professionals providing consultations, Benefit Cosmetics  with their new product not on the market yet, "Ultra Plush Lip Gloss" in the matching colours of their blush and face powders. How divine! Two cupcakes and a glass of wine later, I made my way to the seating area wearing my Loose Button "button" with my name on it to watch a presentation by the sweet and charismatic Chantel Guertin, Editor-at-large of The Kit.ca  and best selling author. The topic of course, Summer Trends. Chantel spoke of ten trends from nails to self tanning to eye lashes to BB cream. She gave some great insight and I found it most entertaining. It was also nice to meet the men behind the button and the staff that make Loose Button as successful as they have become in just over a year of business. After all this fun, the best was yet to come, sitting on a table by the entrance.....a table full of grab bags! Here is the contents......

Thank you Loose Button, I had a wonderful time!

GlamGal Reviews A'kin Rose de mai Anti-oxidant Day Creme

I came across this moisturizing cream called A'kin Rose de mai Anti-oxidant Day Creme on one of my usual jaunts during my lunch hour at work. Every day I wander about the store Winner's as it's the only retail shopping five minutes away from my work. I really shouldn't complain, Winner's always has something new or unique to peruse and I usually end up buying something! What I like is that they have products that you wouldn't normally find at the drug store or even a high end spa or salon. What I was drawn to with this cream was that it boasted how natural it was. I have been doing quite a bit of reading on skin anatomy and what  is so true is that we are what we eat, and if that is the case, we are what we put on our skin as well. I don't want to eat harsh chemicals or trans fats, preservatives or dyes, so why would I want that stuff seeping into my skin and inevitably my body and bloodstream?! I can't go back now!
Here is what is so incredible about A'kin, it's free from sulfates, ethoxylated and petrochemical cleansers, parabens, propylene glycol, silicones, phthalates, DEA, mineral oils and artificial colours. All of their products are ingredient rich, vegan, 100% natural. A'kin's holistic philosophy is similar to the way the skin behaves naturally, their products are made using only the purest botanical (plant-based) ingredients. A'kin's formulations have high concentrations of pure active botanics, which make them powerful, rich and indulgent and ensure they deliver naturally brilliant results. I found the cream to be light on the face, not too light like there is nothing there, but just enough to feel it's on my face. My foundation goes on smoothly and I do use this cream with my BB as well. I like to give my face a good foundation before applying anything else, like a protector. I been using it now for 6 days and my skin feels quite soft. No irritation, no break outs and it doesn't feel greasy at all. I paid $14.99 for 50ml. I still use my smoothing cream with glycolic acid on top though!
The company is called The Purist Company and is Australian made and owned. The day cream I purchased boasts that it will improve the appearance of skin tone and elasticity. Akin Day Creme’s are rapidly absorbed, highly moisturising and enriched with the concentrated nature of Vitamins A, E, B5 and C and Alpha Lipoic acid, as well as Echium oil, which is rich in Omegas 9, 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. These powerful natural ingredients work in synergy to hydrate skin and help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful complexion. Encapsulated in a 12-hour time release formula, it will provide all-day hydration.
What woman in their 20's don't realize, (not all, but some) is that you can prevent a lot of damage and hinder the ageing process by taking the right kind of care of your skin rather than waiting until the wrinkles and fine lines appear and then trying to get rid of them. Be proactive and when you are 40, you won't look it at all!
I give this cream two thumbs up for being natural, organic and not too pricey!

My First French Style Manicure

After looking at all the great nail trends and pictures of creative nail art out here in the Blog World, I had to give it a try! I could never free style this so I used french manicure sticker templates. The pink polish is my own creation, I mixed 3 polishes to get this one. I am a little upset that I will never be able to replicate this colour and I have been using it on my toes for about 6 months. Once it's gone, it's gone. I have already tried to replicate the colour, no luck! I then used Essie's "luxe effects" called "pure perfection". I love this polish too and use it on every mani and pedi I do. I have already bought another one. Essie also has a gold like this and I have that but the white one is what I am drawn to every time!

So what do you think? It's my very first try and I don't have long fingers, my nails are my own and short....I like it!

Thanks to Maddy at Spilled Polish and Kat from Nails my Dreams...............you inspired me!!!

Hair Growing in all the Wrong Places - There Should be a Law Against It

In this day and age where 12 yr old kids know the meaning of the word 'brazilian' and not as a person of Brazilian decent. I can't seem to get my head around the people who walk around with hair dangling from their nostrils or woman wearing the ever lovely feminine go tee. What is going on here? Yesterday at the office I was discussing something of a serious nature with a colleague, a very nice man, everyone loves this guy. I sat there looking up at him and all I could see was this massive forest of nasal hair protruding rather boldly from his nose. A few hours later I was confronted again by another co-worker who had an unimaginable amount of facial hair, maybe it was the light reflected in such a way, but there it was.....the female beard. Do these people live alone? Do they own any mirrors? Do they not have lights or electricity??? What is going on?
I am GlamGal, a well mannered, poised, kind hearted woman, there is no way I am going to tell these people, "for gawd sakes, don't you own a nose trimmer?" or "I hear Neet comes in small strips for facial use now" Somebody has to step up and say something, maybe Human Resources should be sitting them down to tell them no one can concentrate on work when they can't get passed the wet rat up your nose or get some clippers or a razor already. Gees, the bald guy two cubicles down must be thinking how cruel and unfair life is.
Here is the whole sample kit contents
This experience reminded me of these samples I received from the company Veet last spring from the store, Bikini Village. They had a great deal on bikini wraps for the pool, the sales girl gave me a bunch of these samples. I tried the small strips on my private area and was quite successful, I couldn't possibly go to a spa and have the procedure done by anyone so I am really pleased that this worked! The trick is to make the wax just the right temperature by rubbing the strips between your hands. The next trick is to be fast when ripping the strip off. I suggest you practice the procedure a few times on your legs before hitting the private parts.I like the fact that they included an after waxing finishing wipe! It helps to get any extra wax off your skin. I checked out Veet's site and they have alot of great tips and products. Spring has sprung and it will be beach and bikini weather very soon. Best to start now so any irritation will be gone when it's time to hit the beach!
Hair removal has become law, millions of people all over North America  have spent millions of dollars on laser hair removal, that number is estimated to double by 2014 and somehow my office hasn't heard of it. Laser hair removal is the largest of all aesthetics practised now, surpassing all other spa procedures. There is an entire aisle at the drug store catered to razors and depilatory creams......
Just sayin'

Hauling Cargo - and Lots of It! Review of Cargo Cosmetics

Usually I mix it up when it comes to my cosmetics, I will wear Smashbox eye shadow, Pupa blush and Bourjois lip gloss: you get he idea! However, recently I have been able to purchase a heck of alot of Cargo products at a relatively good price and I am using it everyday. It all started when I got a an eye shadow duo from Loose Button, Luxebox. Funny, how I wasn't terribly impressed with that shadow, it didn't have much staying power and faded rather quickly but I couldn't resist the deal I got on a bunch of eye shadows at 'Winners". If you are Canadian you know what store I am talking about and to all my peeps in the U.S., it is comparable to Marshall's.
My final purchase a few days ago was a powder blush, it's a hot pink and the first thing I thought was how nice it would look as a sun kissed look with a pale lipgloss and barely there eyeshadow. I plan on making a nail polish to match it. There is a substantial amount of the blush so I won't mind scraping off a little for that purpose. Check out my post on DIY nail polish.

Here is the first eyeshadow I received. The colours are nice but I found this doesn't have the staying power for me!

Here is the smoky eye palette. This goes on well and is full of pigment. I like how it tells you which area each colour is for! It also comes with a picture showing where to put each colour.

This is my favourite eye palette from Cargo, I use this one everyday. It is moist enough to go on easily with a brush. The colours would suit anyone.
These blues are so pretty with anything! I love to wear black eye liner and baby blue nails with this, I add the shimmer eye shadow for the evening. The shimmer is very subtle, the blue palette is rich and a little goes a long way.

This is he hot pink I just picked up.....gorgeous isn't it! It makes me feel like summer!
I also just purchased Cargo mascara and I have a black eye liner pencil as well. Overall I am happy with Cargo and their products. The price is reasonable and I was able to get a lot for my money. I spent just a little over $50.00 on this haul!
