Glossy Box January 2013 Edition

To my surprise when I picked up my mail yesterday, there was my glorious and heavy as usual Glossy Box waiting patiently for me! I hadn't received the delivery notification like I usually do although I knew the boxes had been shipped. We Glossies keep up with the Facebook page ya know! I almost prefer not getting the Canada Post notice. It is usually incorrect and I am always left hanging....knowing a few days before the box is delivered.

Without further adieu.........

I am most excited to try the Prevage anti-aging day cream and the Brilliance mousse by Wella. What products would you be excited over?

If you haven't joined the internationally elite group of Glossy members yet, don't worry!! You can still join! Go to and when you sign up, use the promo code GLOSSY14 and receive 10% off your very first box! Hurry though! Glossy is about to have their 1 year anniversary in February and I will bet there will be some extra goodies in the box! As you can see from above, this is well worth $21.00 a month and you can cancel anytime. Benefits are plenty with the collection of Glossy Dots and become Glossy!!

History of Beauty Brand Names - What's In a Name?

Do the words Shisedo or Maybelline ring a bell to you? There are so many odd names used in the cosmetic industry that are just plain common to us glam gal's and make up fanatics. You don't even have to know how to apply eye shadow to be familiar with the words Lancome and Sephora! Has the thought, "Where did that name come from?" ever cross your mind?  Well here are some very historical brands associated with beauty that I couldn't resist sharing! I must give all credit to for the fabulous story. Here are just a few of the historic tales:

"What's in a Name? How Beauty Brands Got Theirs!"

Founder and chemist Armand Petitjean started Lancôme in 1935 and named the company for the ruins at Château de Lancosme in France, which he visited on vacation. The yellow flowers at the historical site inspired the brand’s golden rose emblem.

When chemist Eugene Schueller created a safe dye for hair in 1909, he called it l’Auréale after a hairstyle popular in Paris at the time. The company he founded in 1919 was originally called Société Française de Teintures Inoffensives pour Cheveux (or "Safe Hair Dye Company of France"), and eventually became L’Oréal.

The name “Shiseido” translates as “praise the virtues of the earth which nurtures new life and brings forth significant values,” borrowed from the 2000-year-old Chinese Yi King. The beauty brand itself dates back to 1872 in Japan.

In 1945, the brand debuted colloidal oatmeal Soothing Bath Treatment as its first product. The company’s name comes from the scientific name for the common oat, Avena sativa.

Chemist T.L. Williams was inspired to create a product called Lash-Brow-Ine in 1915 after watching his sister, Maybel, apply a homemade concoction of coal dust and Vaseline to her eyelashes and brows. He later switched out its awkward original name for one based on his sister's: Maybel + Vaseline = Maybelline.

The beauty retailer got its start in Paris in 1970, with a moniker derived from sephos, the Greek word for beauty, and Zipporah, Moses’ beautiful wife in the Book of Exodus.

When Fanny May Woititz couldn't find makeup that wouldn't irritate her sensitive skin, her chemist husband Alfred began experimenting with purer, gentler ingredients. The husband and wife founded the brand in 1931 and named it after themselves

Another beauty brand born during the Depression, Revlon also took its name from its founders: Charles Revson and his brother Joseph, along with chemist Charles Lachman (who contributed the L).

More Beauty Box Memberships - U.S. Invasion

I wouldn't be GlamGal if I didn't spend my money on make up and beauty products. With that being said, I have just entered the world of American Beauty Box Memberships, in this case Bag.....being Ipsy! From the comments I have read and the wonderful pics of the past year's beauty samples I doubt that I will be disappointed.
For $14.95 a month USD I will receive a unique make up bag and 4-5 beauty products. The samples are high end and from brands I love such as Murad, The Balm, Josie Moran and Buxom. Canadian residents pay for shipping which is $4.95 but considering I pay $21.00 for Glossy Box every month, I think this just might be more of a bargain. I don't see any drugstore quality products in this bag!

January Ipsy Glam Bag

The above picture is what I will be receiving. I am not sure if I like knowing what I will receive or if I prefer the thrill of mystery. What I do like is the site. You become a member with access to the site and can create your own looks and post all sorts of pictures and create styles that you love while other members can love it and comment too. It's a whole community of women with a love for beauty, style and make up! Thanks Michelle Phan!!! You rock. Michelle inspired the Glam Bag so we must give thanks where it's due!

Could this be a new era for GlamGal? Will Birchbox open it's doors to the beauties in the north? Another beauty box worth mentioning is Beauty Box 5, a U.S. company that delivers to Canada. Beauty Box 5 have been around since March of last year.  4-5 deluxe beauty samples each month for $12.00, you can save some cash if you select the quarterly payment plan at $30.00 USD. I suppose I am hoping to try some new products, with Glymm, Loosebutton, Topbox and Glossy Box, I am finding that I have received repeats of samples. If I am not thrilled over the product, I sure don't want to see it again in another box! Although Topbox has recently started what they call a "Prive" Box. On the site you can check off which of these special boxes would interest you, they are of one brand such as Benefit or Clinique. You aren't guaranteed the Prive Box so you could get the regular box or this. Again, I like the idea but I don't know if I like seeing what I will get!

Here is the selection of Prive Boxes, my January Prive Box was by Clinique:
This included:
Clarifying Lotion 2 for normal-dry combination skin (60mL)
Rinse-Off Eye Makeup Solvent (60mL)
Colour Surge Eye Shadow Duo (1.6g)
Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle & UV Damage Corrector (7mL)

Topbox "Prive" Selections

Beauty Box 5 welcomes Canadians with membership availability

Another U.S. company that is coming soon is IBBeautiful, this is geared for Tweens and Teens, not enough info on the location and availability yet, I hope it will invite Canadians to join unlike Birchbox who have avoided us and welcomed the UK, France and Spain instead!! I mean really!??? Who is closer!??
